St. Lucia is AWFULLY expensive...St. John, USVI, is expensive too, but not as much - and it's low(-er) season there...and so absolutely gorgeous. I posted a few pictures in the U.S. Territories thread if you want to take a look. But stay on the north side or in the Cruz Bay area - if you go to the other end of the island it is very, very quiet and you'll see the wild donkeys, but everything happens in town. Take a day trip to Jost van Dyke and to the Baths on Virgin Gorda. You won't need your passport if you just go to the VI, but you will if you go to the British islands around them. You can go over to St. Thomas for any heavy shopping you want to do, but St. John is a world different than St. Thomas since most of it is national park.
Another spot to consider is Curacao...I loved absolutely everything about it. Very quaint architecture, wonderful beaches. We stayed with friends so I'm no help whatsoever on places to stay, but it was a very, very memorable week.
