We travel coach and, generally, as heavily discounted as we can find. We are considering using SA Airlines to fly from USA to Capetown and/or Johannesburg. Not interested in upgrading to business or first class, thank you. (our other option is likely to be Delta, and we are very happy with them.)

I have flown South African Airlines from NYC to Johannesburg. The plane stopped in Dakar (Senegal) but they wouldn't allow transit passengers to get off the flight. I only flew one way with them as on the way back there was a big strike of SA Airlines at time (which was already quite a few years ago). I was finally able to get on an Air France flight (via Paris) using a SA travel voucher.

You may want to check out Emirates and Etihad. Emirates has been offering some nice 2 for 1 deals and recently. Also Jet Airways had a deal to go from JFK to Johannesburg for under $400 a person, there was an overnight stay in Abu Dhabi and the New York-Abu Dhabi leg was operated by Etihad

My son flew with them recently both to and within Africa - he reported no problems. They were on time I do believe. I enjoyed "watching" and tracking his flights with the little airplane icon online as he traveled .
