I haven't flown in a long time. I like Google Flights especially where you can see the costs months ahead. Since it's been so long what happens after I pay? Do I download the barcode(s) then present those at the gate? Would I get 2 seats next to each other too?
You don't purchase your flight through Google Flights. You find the itinerary you want on Google Flights, then you book and pay through the airline. You will probably have the option to choose your seats at that point, depending on the airline.
Then 24 hours before your flight you can go online to check in and print your boarding pass. You will need that to get through security.
Be aware that many airlines are hanging extra if you want to select seats ahead of time. And not just the small airlines - Delta is doing it if you purchase their cheapest class of ticket on a domestic flight.
Google Flights is a good way to search multiple cities/airlines across your date range easily. I love the map feature that shows for xx dates I can fly to xx locations for xx dollars. Often times I'm just looking for a great deal on the flight without a specific destination in mind so this is very helpful in those times.
After you choose your flight, there is link for you to purchase directly with airline or third party travel website. You also have tracking option which I really like.
There is a 6 digit code called record locator after you purchase ticket. You use that code to check-in in the airport
Be aware that the completion rate from any of these aggregation sites, Kayak, Google flights, etc., is not that high. I've found many flight "deals" that can't be booked, and you only find out late in the process.
What I do now is look at the consolidator sites, then go directly to the airline sites, and prepare to be disappointed.

American & United have now adopted this with their lowest fares as well.

I've had the same problem, especially with international flights. I always look on google flights, but I've only used it once.

I now use Google flight near exclusively. If I cannot buy, then I go to Orbitz and Travelocity. I used to do itasoftware but Google flight is much faster.
