My buddy has convinced me to take a canoe trip with him in late July for a week. I am concerned mainly about the bugs? Anybody ever go to this area in the summer???

I went to Boundary Waters when I was in Boy Scouts about 15 years ago. Everyone had a blast, to this day it ranks in my top 5 trips. We canoed for 10 days if I remember correctly. Day 5 or 6 we stopped at one of our parked vehicles and resupplied.

I don’t recall bugs being a problem during the daytime, but when sundown came the bugs came out. Most of the main lakes keep a pretty good breeze, or at least it was when we were there and I believe that helped keep the bugs away. I do remember canoeing through some marshes and stagnant ponds and the bugs were very bad in those places. Otherwise, not too bad. I don’t recall what month we went, but it must have been during the summer when I was out of school.

I have done 2 kayak trips to this area. One was in early August and the last one was last year the week after Labor Day. Although I am sure you will love the Boundary Water whenever you go, the later in the summer is best for avoiding the bugs. I remember a couple nights where we tried to eat our meals wearing a mosquito net.

When I go there again it will be in early September.

Bathe in Deep Woods Off daily and soak your clothing/tent/sleeping bag with permitherin or whatever it is called (for ticks). Also on calm days those belt clip on repellent thingies work pretty well, especially when you are not moving around too fast. Put one on each side.

I was there for five days last year in August. Yep, the mosquitos were out in force, but only in the campsites, not when you're on the water. There weren't massive quantities of them, but there were enough at every campsite to be annoying.

The bugs are bad but don't let that stop you. It's an incredible experience.
