Jersey City and Long Island City are two very different options for lodging. LIC is literally one stop further on the N/W than the stop we use for our favorite hotel in Manhattan. Unlike DC, the subway costs the same no matter how far you travel.
Agree that as newbies staying near the sites is best, but LIC is a great budget option and is actually better situated than some locations IN Manhattan.
When I mentioned Jersey City as an option in my original suggestion I specifically was thinking of the Newport Mall area just across from downtown's World Financial Center. If the OP was interested in downtown & Brooklyn this area would be handy since it is one stop away from Manhattan on the PATH train or a nice ferry ride over to that side. It also has some less crowded streets & restaurants & a nice marina with a bar/restaurant with a great view of Manhattan that even few NYers are aware of.
That said if it's just a typical midtown oriented visit LIC is indeed the better option.
I will be the odd duck here and tell you to suck it up and pay the price to stay in Manhattan. No, really. Staying outside of Manhattan = more travel time via train / subway /bus = more travel costs = less convenient.
If you stay in Manhattan and close to the places you want to visit, all you have to do is walk out the hotel door and everything else will be within walking distance. This is the very thing you want to recreate with your daughter, isn't it? You can't do that if you stay in Jersey City, Long Island City, etc.
Yes, if you've been to Manhattan before. The OP is bringing her daughter who's never been to Manhattan before, and she wants to show her daughter all the places in Manhattan she saw during her first trip with her husband. In her case, staying in Manhattan makes more sense.
