What type of passport do you need to go on an out of state trip and enter government buildings without a real ID? Is a passport book by itself enough ID?

A US passport trumps any state-issued drivers license.

You can use a US passport to enter any state, 'cept maybe Texas.

Get a US passport and be done. It's good for everything.

@rational1: why do you think that one can't enter Texas with US passport??

Either the passport book or the card will be accepted.

I think that may have been a not-so-subtle dig at the state of Texas.

Either will do. For domestic travel, the passport card is easier to carry (because it's wallet-sized). For most forms of international travel (which you might wish to do in the future), a passport book is required. I'd go ahead and get both; the cost is only a little bit more than you'd pay to just get one or the other.

No passport is needed for ground travel in the US. For air travel, the TSA has a specific list of allowable IDs. See https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-...identification

Re government facilities, they can set their own requirements, so it's best to check with the specific facility you wish to enter. A military base might be different from a Social Security office.

See https://www.dhs.gov/real-id-frequently-asked-questions. where it says:

"Q. What about non-DHS federal entities? What types of licenses and identification cards will they accept for access purposes?

Federal agencies have the authority to set their own minimum security access requirements .....To ensure you have the proper identification, DHS recommends that you contact the federal agency you plan to visit in advance, to obtain information regarding identification requirements."

A passport card works anywhere domestically. I have one. I don’t plan to have a RealID license for a while. My sister lives in Vancouver. The card lets me drive into Canada if something happens when my passport is being renewed. It’s also spare ID if I lose my passport and license. It was only a few bucks extra the last time I renewed my passport. Why not?

The passport card is good to get into Canada or Mexico The Passport book is used to get into all Countries. We have been even using our Passports for Domestic Travel the last few yrs. & to get our DL when we moved to another State. They told us when we were getting our Passports it wasn't necessary to get the card, we didn't & it's been 8 yrs.

Card is for surface travel, drive or boat border crossings only. You need a book to fly out or into the country.

Card is half the price of a book. I have both.

A book is preferable on a cruise ship. If you experience a medical problem and want to fly home, you need the book.
