The vacation home rental service polled 1,067 adult American travelers to find out which place they’d like to go if time and money weren’t a factor. And as the results showed, we’re all dreaming of a trip down under.
“When we asked Americans where they’d go if all constraints were removed, the results hinted at why some destinations might remain a dream and how those dreams evolve as we grow older,” reps for VRBO wrote in the survey’s findings. “Among all survey respondents, Australia was the top international dream destination.”
Australia, really? I'm a little surprised. Australia in the top 10, sure, but I wouldn't have picked it for #1. My friends are all talking about Italy and Iceland, not Australia.
But the sample size of the poll was not very large.

could be skewed data by the way they ask the question...and if you are a T&L and VRBO type of traveler. ('recreational travel', not 'intentional travel' / LONG time away...)
AU and NZ are pretty spendy air and timewise... (Compared to some really NICE places much closer...)
If you are going to stay a few months, AU and NZ get more affordable.
All destinations are worth the effort and expense... if possible. (IMHO)
Additionally, all respondents rated relaxation as their primary reason for travel, indicating “a healthy desire to disconnect from the stress of our daily lives and reconnect with family and friends while away.”
Hmmm, I didn't know that so many people had friends and family in
Australia. I'm betting VRBO has a lot of properties for rent in Australia.
I would have thought that the top choice was an African safari. But FROM doesn't really have rentals there, do they?

I'm surprised, but that said, I hope to have am month someday to explore it. It's too big and pricey for me to do well, so yeah, if money was no object, it would be in my top 5.
I have been to Australia twice. Both times the incentive was because I knew different people each time there to host me in the Melbourne area. Melbourne is one of the most livable cities in the world and has lots to offer a visitor. But I doubt I would have gotten there rather than some other destination if I didn't have friends there (that I had met outside of Australia).
I have to agree. Money not being the issue but you need a lot of time off to go that far and really explore the place.
