Let's just get this thread back on track, it's about circumnavigation of Africa. My thoughts are:

1. West Coast of Africa near Nigeria is now the world's piracy hot spot
2. Somali pirates have also made attacks this year so they are still active

Whether it's too dangerous is up to each person's risk tolerance, I'm not a sailor. The article about one of the Somali attacks mentioned that the ship had gotten lazy, traveling too close to Somalia when most ships now give a much wider gap.

Has anyone done this besides the Phoenicians?
Can't think of a more treacherous trip. How much ammunition will you have onboard?

Supposedly there are stretches of the Amazon that are really bad, I'm not sure if it falls into piracy statistics but robbery etc.

Our last boat trip through Gulf of Oman and Yemen, They boarded Filipino guards with automatic weapons and a few hand held rocket launchers. We didn't have any trouble, but I wondered about the many 30 - 40 ft boats jammed with not-so-friendly looking guys were doing way off shore. Maybe out of a daily voyage.
