Bali.... There are many "better" options nearby.
Honeymoon harbored a lot of unpleasant recommendations. (42 yrs ago), good lesson in who NOT to listen to! Salvaged it due to a lot of variety (8 destinations in a month)... Next time.. stay for a month at a nice quiet travel hub. Adventure from there when / if you want.Seems honeymoon is quite possible to mess up.
Later that yr we did a 12 week camping trip... Far better, but plenty of mistakes and surprises. (And memories to laugh about now.)
'recommendations' from foreign nationals can bring surprises to a Western traveler. We really aren't used to seeing the adventure in a 2 star hotel, but often that is all that is available in certain remote towns.

I've never cared about the hotel. I get Motel 6's and Super 8's --- and if I'm alone, may sleep in the car on alternating days --- to save money so I can travel more often. If I ever manage to get to Europe I'm fine with staying in those shoebox hotel rooms I've heard about (or hostels).
As for recommendations... I dunno, I usually look online for things to see on trips rather than asking friends. I guess the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula, which my mom suggested, was one. It was okay but didn't really stand out compared to other PNW forested areas. Even just on the Peninsula, I think Lake Crescent and Rialto Beach are forested areas with a nicer ambiance.
30A in Florida. We know so many people who go there. We tried it once and didn't like it. We found the beaches crowded and hard to walk on and no tide. We much prefer Hilton Head Island for a beach vacation.
