Anywhere with my my wife and two boys, we drove highway 1 I believe , the california coast from Santa Monica north to San Jose, stayed in the beach by destin on okaloosa island fir spring break, now will be long driving to Florida this spring break. Don't remember ever hearing my boys complain in the back seats. Oh and the DVD player helps too ..
My husband and I did 2 back to back tours in Europe in 2008 (21 days) with some free time on our own. We saw Pompeii and the coast in Italy, Rome, Orvieto, Tuscany, Florence, Venice then London, Paris and Disneyland Paris. It was amazing! I also loved one trip to Mexico where we explored Coba and climbed the Nohoch Mul pyramid.
I backpacked down to Yelapa with a fellow student body back in 1974 when it was still little known (Vallarta was starting to draw some tourists because of the Taylor-Burton flick "night of the iguana"(funnyly you don't see an iguana in the black and white film) was filmed there a few years before. First time in the Tropics for me, it was awesome!
Lots of great vacations, but the best are, as the OP suggested with the vacation to the farm, those that bring you closer with your loved ones. My favorite was a nature photography trip with my beloved late wife across southern Canada in our pickup camper. It was beautiful country, but what made it great was being with her. We'd be cruising down the highway and she'd give me a wicked little grin and wiggle in her seat. I'd give her an equally wicked grin and find the closest place where we could pull off the highway, go back to the camper, have our ways with each other, then hit the road again.
It was also our last long vacation (5 weeks), as she died unexpectedly before the next summer rolled around. I'm so thankful that we took that one.
It was so nice to totally avoid the airlines and not have to deal with the TSA, not to mention the sense of pride by getting all the way down there to the idyllic sandbars and hidden beaches totally under my own power without the help of any local guide.
