We have 3 weeks to drive to NYC (from Austin TX) in Feb/March '09. We are returning to the UK after living here for a year and want to see as much of the USA as poss in a few weeks!
Which route would you take, what is unmissable, the most scenic, the best for kids to see fun things as well?
Would like to dip our toes in the Pacific as well...Thinking west Texas via El Paso, thru AZ, then LA to visit friends, onto Las Vegas (Grand Canyon maybe).
After that...????
Utah...Colorado...Nebraska? Then Iowa, Illinios, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York....?
Possibly a little ambitious! Nearly 5,000 miles....We will be renting a car so could fly some of the distances.

Absolutely all ideas gratefully received
Yeah, I think that is a bit ambitious for only 3 weeks. While I can understand the desire to see the Western part of the US, given your limited amount of time, I think you're best off heading east.
So....some options in no particular geographical order:
New Orleans, Asheville (NC), Savannah (GA), Charleston (SC), DC and Philly for cities. Smokey Mountains, Mammoth Cave, Okefenokee Swamp, Shenandoah, Outer Banks of NC would be some good outdoor things to hit. You might be able to make it to Florida as well.
Anyway, I'm sure some others will chime in with some ideas as well.
Maybe go to El Paso to check out Mexico, then head to Grand Canyon then Moab, UT. Go thru Moutains to Denver Decide to fly or drive the plains. Head either North or South. North through Chicago Ohio Pittsburgh or South-Arkansas, Smoky Mountains, North Carolina.
If it was warmer time of year, I would explore the mississippi river valley from south to north. there has to be many fun things to see. Plus, I would hit as many theme parks as possible.
In feb/march - go west toward along southern states then north through california to washington.
I have driven back an forth accross the US many times,The inner-mountain west is exspansive, you can drive 13 hours an not go any where, and you will be board looking at the same thing for two days. I just got back from a 20 state 8 days in hell road trip of the south, east, and northeast. I would not try to see the entire US in three weeks or you will be staring at it from a car window. The states out east are small and you can see a lot in three weeks . If was traveling this time of year i would go out west were its warm, forget about the midwest fly over it,
hello, i ' m french, i leave in paris; i would like to make a road trip in states, from new york to austin and i have a dog, do you think it's a really bad idea to take him with me or do you think it 's possible to find easily motels, hotels and restaurant that allow pets during the trip?

Take I-10 to I-65 to I-75 to I-40 to I-85 to I-95.
That will enable you to see New Orleans, Mobile, Atlanta, the Great Smokey Mountains, Asheville, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia which are all very interesting cities in their own right.
Or if you want you can take I-35 to I-30 to I-40 east to I-85 which will enable you to see Memphis or Nashville in addition to the Smokeys.
Also I believe Motel 6 is relatively dog friendly.
Hope this helps.
