Sorry no link, but live5news.com reports:

In Mt. Pleasant, SC: 29 yr. old Cornelius Davis, a Special Olympics coach and teaching asst., has been arrested for sex crimes against his student, a Special Olympics participant. According to police, Davis sent inappropriate text messages and photos to the girl's phone, had sex with the young girl twice at a motel.

Special Olympics participants typically have an intellectual disability as well as adaptive disabilities such as problems with self-care, communication, social skills, etc. (as per S.O. website).

Hi there greatblue....I am thinking that my primary line/sentence, when seeing these threads should simply be "are you kidding me?"...however, after all the stories, charges, arrests, trials, convictions [or hopes of convictions] that are continually being peppered throughout this forum, we all pretty much know that 'are you kidding me' is not hardly the appropriate question to ask!

I do not know whether these types of horrific and despicable crimes happened years ago or if they are more a recent type of crime. I would suspect that they always happened but perhaps the press did not find them sufficiently newsworthy to write about; that pleas were orchestrated before any sensationalistic [is that a word] courtroom trial and drama; was our society that decadent back then and/or have these crimes simply become more of a reflection of our societal flaws; do we have less empathy for people now than we did in the past; do we have more sociopaths living in our communities now than we did; is our legal system more injured now than in the past that offenders believe they can get away with doing pretty much anything without the fear of being punished and/or held accountable?

To violently attack anyone is not acceptable; to attack the vulnerable, how horrible is that.

Any crime against another is despicable... but you are so right... a horrendous and ugly crime like this is the worst...

What a da*m coward... taking advantage of/abusing an individual who is some way is disabled.... cannot get uglier than that....

Reminds me of the bed-bound elderly woman raped in her nursing home.... that happened in my area, as did the SO crime. Oh and the teacher/coach who has 22 felony sex crimes against boys...(his wife had triplets just before he was arrested) and the composer who has sex crime charges regarding child porn...

They are all in my area. Just think then how many are going on throughout the US.

As you know, SP, we post these types of crimes not because they are enjoyable to read but because we all need to know how women and children and the disabled are at risk of crimes against them.

I blame The Citadel for that teacher ... a complaint was already filed against him from The Citadel summer camp program of sexual abuse ... this guy graduated and he applies to teach school ... joins church and works with young boys. He found his gold mine of young boys to molest!

Carolinawoman - how true, how correct and how pitiful. I have tried on several occasions, unsuccessfully I must say, and sadly say, to start a thread in True Crime specifically regarding Accountability, or perhaps I should say, or lack thereof.

I think in all too many of these cases, it is either passing the buck, it is saying oh, I thought so and so would come forward, or I am just one person, what could I do to change anything, circumstances, prevent; or the judiciary when making decisions such as a bail hearing, and whether there should be bail, or a high bail, or reviewing a long history of violent crime and NOT using that information as a barometer for what inevitably will be yet another violent crime, when something could be prevent by not allowing bail; or .....the list goes on.

Putting serious allegations under the carpet are inevitably going to create a large bump in the rug; doesn't it make sense to investigate - perhaps the allegation is false, for whatever reason, and if that is the case, then that individual is no longer a person of interest. For me, I would much rather on err on the side of caution than to open the barn door and.....
