Joran van der Sloot told a judge on Tuesday that he will fight extradition from Peru to the United States, where he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, his lawyer said.
Interesting. Well, I don't want him here. I would have thought he would be chomping at the bit to get away from his Peru prison cell...obviously not. Hmm...must be more cushy than I thought.
Oh...this is why
If he stays put, Van der Sloot could be released on parole after serving a third of his 28-year sentence for killing a Lima woman he met at a casino in May 2010, said Altez. But if he were convicted in the U.S. he likely wouldn’t qualify for early parole in Peru. Under the U.S.-Peru extradition treaty he would be returned to Peru to finish out his sentence. Then, if he were convicted in the U.S., he would be sent there serve the second sentence.

Reason: edit
He is not dumb, he knows he can do a third of his sentence and stand a chance of parole. He doesn't want to lost that opportunity. With good behavior he can be out in just about 10 years ... still plenty of time left in his life to wreck havoc far and wide on other females.
Peru just might extradite him to the US to avoid the parole eligibility. If he is found guilty in the US and receives a prison sentence he would be returned to Peru to complete his 28 years and then returned to complete any sentence in the US ... a win win situation to keep him behind bars and innocent females would be safe from this predator.
