My advice, especially this time of year, is to get outside. It's absolutely perfect weather right now to get out and enjoy some of the views. Even if you're not an avid hiker, you can pack a picnic, head out of town a bit and go for a stroll out to the ledge of a rock formation. That would provide you with the ambiance (views to die for) for the nice meal you packed. Bring a camera and create a memory album you can add to with future dates.

Whatever you do, be flexible and focus on enjoying the person you're with. When you're not working so hard on the "gotta have fun" part, it really does come naturally. Enjoy!

Hello -- Hubby and I have been married almost 31 years but way back when we were dating in Tucson we had some fun times. Now we have a daughter living down there, just out of U of A, so we keep up on events. If I were going on some first dates I would suggest doing something active, like taking a picnic to Sabino Canyon. Going to the AZ-Sonora Desert Museum or the Randolf Park Zoo would be good, too. At night, I would suggest taking in a movie downtown at the Fox Theater. Take a ride on the trolley car and hop off and stop at Gentle Ben's. Or go to the Maverick, where they have live country-western music. Head to a Saturday night car cruise and see the old classic cars. Go to the driving range and hit a couple of buckets of golf balls. The worst thing to do on the first few dates is to go somewhere too noisy where you cannot hear each other. Also, some physical acivity, like miniature golf, breaks the ice. Go to Bookman's and then out for ice cream. Take a walk! At Christmas, I would walk or take a Horse & Buggy ride around the Winterhaven neighborhood and then go for hot cocoa and dessert. Now that is the kind of date someone will remember 30 years later. The simple activities are the best.

Here are my suggestions and they would give you a chance to talk and get to know each other, which is the whole idea right?

1. Miniture Golf - Cute, fun, competitive
2. Dinner at Sakura's. You sit around a cooking table and the chef comes out and puts on a little show.
3. Gas Light Theater. Seriously this is a MUST. Great show and real fun memory.

As a note I did all three of these on the first date which started around 3:00pm. By 11:00 she was hooked.

You should be picking her up at her door. If she doesn't trust you to allow that then keep talking or texting until she does. Bring flowers (not roses) in a loose bundle (not in a vase). Don't be a jerk and play music in the car while driving. Remember it's all about her and you should engage her in conversation. Warning keep your yap shut. Ask leading questions and then let her talk. She needs to know you are a good listener. On that note, pay attention! These little first chat sessions should be a data mining dream. Remember you are looking for clues as to what she likes. These are guides for you to follow during this date and future ones.

When you are out with her, keep your eyes on her the whole time. She wants your undivided attention. This means if the UofA cheerleaders just happen to stroll into the restuarant, you should be completely oblivious. Also don't do the flirting thing with the waitress. It may be cool when out with your buddies, but not tonight romeo.

Don't rush things and be a gentleman the whole time. Opening doors for her is a must and if you don't do this anyway, then find your dad and smack him in the head for not teaching you this.

Want to hold her hand? Wait until after dinner and ASK first!

Note of caution, do not take her to a movie for a first date. This is a rookie move and it's destined for disaster, especially if the movie sucks.

My first date with my (now) husband 4 years ago was mini-golfing. I was in town from a business trip and we met up (knew each other online for years as friends). It was a nice, no pressure atmosphere. We had lots of fun (I won - utterly destroyed him - but to this day, not sure if he LET me... hmmm) and we just talked and got to know each other (better).
