Hi Everyone! I was hoping for a bit of advice. I'll be in Tucson for one night on December 17th with my Mum and have two issues I need advice with.

1. Can you recommend the best restaurant that would be good for a vegan daughter and her meat eating Mum? (And please, no fine dining! Sadly, my budget cannot afford anything over $40 for a meal for two.) My Mum's likes include Italian, Mexican, Chinese, and general Cafe fair.

2. Can you recommend any holiday offerings around town to see? It is really hard being on the road around Christmas time, so I would love some advice to make the night a bit more magical.

Any other advice would be much appreciated! Thank You!

1. Just vegan/vegetarian food with a great atmosphere is Govinda's (no meat though)

2. Winterhaven is a neighborhood that shows off its egregious consumption of electricity for your enjoyment.

Govinda's would be my first choice for a vegan place but, yeah, they never, ever serve meat. Closed Sunday and Monday nights.
You may also want to consider Yoshimatsu. Truly authentic Japanese though, so it tends to freak some people out. They have sushi, various noddle and meat dishes, but also quite a bit of vegan and vegetarian fare. Other than that, there's Lovin' Spoonfuls and the Garland that actually specialize in vegan items. You should also look at Wilko and Pasco's by campus, as they do a variety of vegan and meat dishes and are generally very, very good and have excellent atmospheres. Just don't go on the night of a home UA basketball game.

If you go to Winterhaven, don't go on a drive thru night. I used to live there, and it was a disaster on those nights, and there's a reason why they don't do many of them. If you want to park for free, the neighborhood south of Fort Lowell and west of Country Club is completely safe.

As luck would have it, the 17th is the annual Downtown Parade of Lights. It's cute and kind of fun. A couple of caveats to know about it though: it's cold and there are no public bathrooms.
Also take a look at the Tucson Weekly's City Week section, as that's a pretty comprehensive list of area events.
