Actually, I have two questions. Are there any major grocery stores, like Vons or Kroger, near the U of A campus? Second question is, is it true there are alot of cholos/cholas in Tucson?

Thanks ahead of time.

nearest "major" food store is Safeway on the SE corner of Campbell and Broadway, about a half-mile from the corner of campus closest to it.....Fry's is the Kroger-owned local food store and that is about a mile from campus at the NW corner of 1st Ave and Grant....no Vons in Arizona.....

there's a significant population of Hispanics in Tucson, so there will be all kinds of people....sounds like you might be from SoCal?.....I think the Hispanics here might not be as flashy/cholo-ish as over there....much more laid-back over here.....but there are all kinds, as in any demographic

Thanks, I Google-mapped your suggestions. Safeway is not too far but, still looks like a car drive away.

Yes, I am from LA. I am more concerned about the mindset of people rather than their styles. Here in LA, today 2013, I'd say that whole scene is around 3, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being worst, 1 being best. On Google maps, the people seem cool and laid back, as you described.
