I suddenly have two full years now to downsize and I will take full advantage of it now that I am hearing about all the moving horror stories. Our place in Tucson came furnished anyway so no furniture will come with us. I will have to ship my art supplies and paintings though.....plus even though I sold many, many books, I still have some I don't want to part with. I will have to ship these things via UPS or USPS. Time consuming but I think that since I will have no furniture it makes no sense to hire a truck.

It might still be cheaper to use a moving company than to ship your goods unless you have a contact who has a good corporate contract with FEDEX or UPS. Moving companies like small loads and very small loads as MOST trucks heading west have some cubage that remains unfilled. If you are willing to pack it all, the actual cost of hauling is pretty reasonable but so remember that you retain liability on all boxes that YOU pack.

If you google Conservative Cities in the U.S., population over 250,000, you'll find Mesa, AZ parked at the #1 spot, not surprising at all. Then there's the Oklahoma cities of OKC and Tulsa and there's Colorado Springs, no surprise there either. Then down a little ways you'll find Las Vegas, and a couple notches below that, lies Phoenix (a tad more liberal than Las Vegas) and about 8-9 notches below that lies Tucson.

I just finished reading a bio of Mo Udall, a true liberal, and I definitely think his 30 years in Congress, representing Tucson + had some impact on Tucson's liberalness, which is one reason for my relocating there to retire.

And, if Tucson proves too conservative, hell! Off to Nogales I'll go for an evening, and not necessarily to their red light district!
