Anyone know how to find info on times, frequency, types, etc. of the trains that pass through Vail, just to the north of I-10?

I think there are actually two sets of tracks, and I'm wondering how annoying they would be to live by.

About 20 years ago, there was quite a bit of commercial traffic as that line was serving cargo coming and going to the west coast. The Amtrak only runs out of Tucson every three days.

Freight trains aren't going to be predictable.

I live in Benson - same rail line just a bit further east.
You can figure on about 1 train every 20 minutes or so each way - for a total of 6 trains an hour (or one every 10 minutes - though sometimes eastbound and westbound trains will arrive at the same time). It's a very busy route - the southernmost intercontinental track across the country. It's essentially the rail equivalent of I-10.

THanks everyone! I posted on our neighborhood listserve as well, and learned there are about 80 per day! Wow! We were thinking of a house that sits 140 feet from the tracks, and our realtor is trying to sway us away from it. Though I think we'd get used to the noise, he's more worried about resale. That sure is a lot of trains!

Eighty a day is a lot! It will most definately limit the number of people interested in your home when you sell.

Being about half a football field away from train tracks is definitely closer than most people might want to be. However, I was much closer than that when visiting one particular state, and believed I was experiencing a mild earthquake when a train passed by!

We once lived a across the street from freight trains in upstate NY. The house was quite old and had many cracks in the walls. I believe from all the rumbling. And we only had about 2 per day. They were very, very long trains though. I would never do that again

We finally were near the house when a train came through. Yikes. Inside the house may or may not be terrible, but from the front yard it was brain jarring. Just another "what a shame" in the saga of our house hunting.

Thanks everyone for the comments!!
