They also tend to be more common near foothills and area where the elevation is increasing, like sides of mountains, at least in N. AZ.

Never seen a scorpion in Green Valley in four years. Honestly it is far down on my list of concerns as a scorpion sting is probably about as toxic as a bee sting.

I think I saw one a few years ago when we bought our house in Green Valley. It was inside and I think I stepped on it in bare feet. It was only about the size of a quarter and I only noticed it later when I turned on more lights. I have never seen one "in the wild" outside. As jlawrence01 said above, it is way down the list of things to worry about. One of the most dangerous things around here is potholes in the roads!!!

Running your foot into a teddy bear cholla barefoot or in sandals would be far more painful than a scorpion.

What I find interesting is the fear of the very remote possibilities of a rattlesnake or a scorpion versus the less remote issue of flash floods in monsoon season or dehydration in the summer months.

Anywhere one of those things hits, it's hurts a whole lot. Once my dog and I got attached by a piece of cholla and he was pulling away from me and that hurt more than anything.

I'm in a rural area an hour from Tucson. I don't use pesticides. I have maybe one or two scorpions a year most years. One was huge but they are supposed to be less painful than the small ones. If they stay out of sight, I don't mind them because they help me by eating other bugs. None of my dogs or I have ever been stung. Scorpions respond aggressively, raising their tails and not backing down, and it scares the dogs.
