We are planning on visiting the U of A in October for our younger son to check out. Does anyone have any recommendations for a fun restaurant near the UA? TIA

Hope you have a great time your visit!! One that's fun for us is Cafe Poca Cosa. It's downtown, but you two and your son would want to see downtown. When we are visiting, we usually go for lunch on a Saturday. Not too busy then. It's right at a parking deck. Check it out. :-)

Rachel Ray did Cafe Poca Cosa on her Tucson segment of $40 A Day years ago. We usually take a little stroll after lunch around downtown.

At the restaurant website Suzana Davila also features Shanali Davila's "Cup Quequitos" Cupcakes. Very cute.

Not sure what you are looking for but here are some ideas.

Lindy's on 4th. Casual burger place. 4th Ave has a lot of fun shops and restaurants. You will want to check it out if time permits.

Guero Canelo. This is very casual and inexpensive. I highly recommend the Sonoran hotdog with a Jamaica agua fresca. Everything else I have had there is tasty as well.

Bison Witches, also on 4th. Huge, tasty sandwiches.

Frog and Firkin on University Blvd. Pizza, burgers, etc.

These are just a few. There are lots of restaurants.I would also ask your tour guide and even random people for recommendations.

Most of the best restaurants around the university are located on University Ave between Euclid and Park Avenues.

These include:

Red's Smokehouse and Tap

No Anchovies

A young friend of mine who goes to U of A swears by the Sonoran hot dog at El Guero Canelo. Guy Fieri had that place on his show some time back, too.

If you are staying overnight I highly recommend this place for coffee and breakfast:

Barista Del Barrio
1002 N Grande Ave, Tucson, AZ 85745

My apologies, the thread title says day trip so breakfast places are not needed. Still a great place for coffee, ice tea or lemonade.
