Yes, this is a sad story, but to the lot of us is just a statistic. It can - and does - happen to anyone, and it's not good.

Like others have commented, this is not detrimental to Tucson. I've lived there for a total of four years, never been faced with violence whatsoever, even after living in so-called "problem" areas like Broadway/Alvernon and 1st/Prince. I lived where I could afford to live, lived peacefully, and didn't have any problems. Maybe I was lucky? Who knows.

Now I live near a metropolis that has seen 1,200 murders in one year. Am I scared or turned off? No. I'm not involved in that circuit and it *generally* effects those who involved in it. For the few that are killed as innocent bystanders, it is certainly sad, but not monumental, I'm sorry to say.

I have lived in exactly the area the OP described, and never felt any fear. Many nights spent jogging along Mountain Avenue or walking to the 4th Avenue bars just beyond the campus area. Her loss was just bad luck, not a typical occurrence.

83 for 2008, a HUGE increase FAR outpacing the population growth.

Now lets pick another city that's near the top of the crime list to make Tucson look better.

Well, it appears that God's backyard for one has higher crime rates:

The first link was from '07, but if you insist on '08... God's backyard is still ahead.

I have to say this surprised me, too. I suppose the inner city contributes to it... just like any other place.
