I always enjoy observing javelina, and I completely understand taking a nap in the shade on a hot day. Where I got a bit lost was during the mating behavior section of this video. On the best of days, I cannot tell a male javelina from a female unless a baby is nursing or when there is mating behavior. During mating behavior, I assumed the mountee was the female and the mountor was the male. I may be completely wrong, but it made sense to me. So if I go with my view of how these things work, the the ear nibbler was the female? I suppose that is not out of the question since that same thing can happen with humans. I don't know, at this point, I am a little confused. What do you think???? And why did that one javelina get kind of aggressive when the other two were messing around? Were those a pair of "teenagers" messing around and an adult said "Hey! Knock that crap off!" Then just a minute or two later, they all laid together for a nap! Go figure!!!

So how do you tell male from female? What were those, just practice mounts??? A show of dominance?

The male is the one with his head down, and the female is the one that's always nagging. Could be either, or just trying to find out which way they lean.
