I'm moving in August from Orlando, FL to Tucson with our 2 cats. I opted to leave me leopard gecko and fish tanks with relatives as I'm worried that they would overheat or not survive the 4 day trip.

Currently our plan is to get one of those big collapsible dog crates from PetsMart. This way we can secure the litter box in it so my large cats don't tip it over while using it. Make sure you get flea and tick meds for your pets, as most hotels you'll stay in that allow pets will have some combination of the two. It's never fun to start a new place with a flea infestation.

The other thing that I am going to do to is get one of those collapsable pet food and the water trough that connects to portable water bottles. Look at your local PetsMart, they have tons of travel type items.

One thing you might also want to look into is a harness. If you do open the crate at rest stops and someone has the car door open this will help so that you can put them on leash and make sure they don't run out into the highway. Lastly make sure to have some toys, and treats that they like to make them feel at home.

Some good advice, Meeko. We also took in their little cat beds (or what the cats considered their beds) just to give them a little sense of home.

We travel a lot with our pets....of which we have a few....I have found above all else a sense of humor and remaining calm is the best way to enjoy your ride. You might get a book on traveling the US with pets so that you can book hotels ahead of time.
