In a couple of weeks, I'm going back to CO to officially put our house on the market. It'll be like Bob dying all over again as I have to watch his things taken out, and then walk through the empty house. It'll be like cutting a piece of my heart out of my chest, as I'll never see that house, those memories, the views, ever again. 35 years there, and it will soon be gone. I know that when everyone's gone, and it's just me wandering around the empty house, I'll be a blithering idiot. Sigh.

I've lined up a daughter and her hubby to help clean out the house on the 19th, 20th and 21st, but then they go back to KS, and movers and packers and an auction house are all lined up for that week. The vehicles up there are all sold, except my car which is here and all I need. A lot of work.

Once the house is on the market, I'm no longer a CO resident, so I'll have to register to vote here, and do the car and license thing, change the title on this house to just me, and change the homeowner's insurance to just me. I use State Farm, so I'll have my CO agent talk to our OV agent and they can duke it out and give me the bottom line.

I read online about my son and I being able to get new AZ driver's licenses by just presenting our Colorado ones and either a Soc Sec card, birth certificate or Selective Service card. Apparently, we won't have to take any written or driving tests. It's no problem for him, he has all three forms of ID plus the license from CO. I don't have an original birth certificate (I'd have to send away for it) or a Seclective Service card and I have no idea where my Soc Sec card is (I'm sure it'll be packed by the movers somewhere), so how do I get an AZ driver's license? And, since my son is only 20, will he have to get a new license in June when he's 21? He would in CO, so if he does, it's probably worth it for him just to wait.

Then, I need to title the car in AZ. Can I do that where I get my DL like in CO or is there a separate place? The nearest DMV place to my ZIP is at Shannon Rd and Ina just west of Foohills Mall. My question is, the car is titled as His full name and below it my full name, then off to the side it says JTWROS which I'm guessing means Joint Tenancy with right of survivorship, although I'm not sure. I will need to get his name off the title and the title in to my name but there's a loan on the car. So, how do I change the registration, title and loan to my name so I can get AZ plates? Will I need the death certificate and the Personal Representative papers? And, since I'm not employed, will they even let me change the loan to my name?

My word for the day is: HELP!! Sorry this is so long.

I'm still in my "too much to do and too little time to grieve" mode, but as more and more gets done, and I'm not running hither and yon to banks, investment companies, making huge decisions, lining up movers and packers and the auctin house, a 30 yard dumpster, vet appts for Health Certifications, pet transport company, pet sitters, handymen to finish the basement, contracts to sign (with my mouse--it's so cool--), Holidays to get through and all the other things that took up my time, there's more time for grieving which right about now, scares the living daylights out of me as it means I'll lose some control over my feelings and reactions, and thereby be vulnerable.

I just need some easy to follow instructions as my brain is not yet on think and process mode.

Thanks

I think all your questions will be answered here, Marcy.

Motor Vehicle Division

I'm sorry you have to go through such pain... I can imagine what parting with this house means to you.

Good luck and try to stay strong!

Lots of questions here, Marcy.

My suggestion would be to take the vehicle plus all documents available to the MVD office on Shannon Road. Try to avoid the "peak times" and allow plenty of time because the vehicle needs to be inspected first (basically just verifying the VIN with the documents) plus, depending on the age (over 5 years, I believe) it will need an Emission Test (Prince Road on the West side of the freeway).

The Arizona MVD Offices are fairly well organized and staffed, especially compared to California, but be prepared for a few hurdles.

Good Luck and holler if you need someone to drop off some food and a change of clothing if your visit is extended.

! ! ! ! ! !

Marcy, when I renewed mine in December I took my old license of course and the birth certificate. Guess what...the name is different than on the birth certificate....they used my bank debit card or I think would take a credit card also as they have names and signatures the same as the old license.

Thanks Sierra, Bummer and Granny!! Sierra, that site answered most of my questions. It looks like Andrew doesn't have to get another license in June. In CO you have a 16 year old, 18 year old and 21 year old licenses. They're called graduated licenses. I just couldn't see paying for a license now, and again in June, so this is good.

My car is a 2007, so I think I'm good for no emissions. I talked to US Bank today and they sold the loan to SunTrust? Anyway, Suntrust does an automatic withdrawal for the car payment so I need to talk to them about the loan and then MVD about the title or possibly the county clerk.

When I get back here on the 27th, I'll still have the house until it sells, but since I can't (or don't) live there, it's not my primary residence. This is, so I can refinance this house, register to vote, do the MVD, and everything else to establish full time residency. This is going to be weird having an AZ license. I got my license at 16 in CO, so it's the only state I've been licensed in until now.

Good to know I can just use a credit card if need be. That's a relief. Thanks for that info, Granny! It didn't dawn on my that, of course, my birth name and married name are different. Duh.

I'll only have to spend one night alone in the house, then my daughter and her husband come for the weekend. By Sunday night, we should have all the auction and trash stuff set aside so the packers can come in on the 22nd and 23rd, then the movers the 24th and 25th, then on the 26th, I have to go through Bob's office and clean out his secretary's office and his office so we can sell that, too. But, I'll be in a hotel the whole time, so that will be better. I 'll be around people rather than alone out in the boonies.

Thanks again for all the good advice!

an existing driver's license from another state and a current government issued picture id did the trick for me.
in my case it was my NM driver's license and my US passport.

Marcy, bring a big box of Kleenex for that time in the house. It will be your time to grieve and talk to your DH in a setting w/good memories. My mother told me that she talked to my father less and less as the years passed, but she still talked to him at least once a day up to the time she died.

I talk to him every day as though he were in the room with me. I haven't dreampt of him yet, or heard him talk to me, but I do talk to him. Tonight, I made his recipe of fried rice, and when it came to the scrambled eggs, I said out loud, to no one, "I scramble them until they're tough and well done, right? I thought so, thanks!" I'll ask him where things are that I've misplaced, talk to him about the weather, and just generally babble to him the I would have done, had he been here. I call his cell phone to hear his voice. I do all kinds of stupid things. But, mostly, I've started crying a lot. I think it's because things are winding down on the business end, and I'm getting the hang of this bill paying, and dickering with people over bills, that now I have more free time on my hands. I'm taking this time to play. My son bought me Sims 3 and the World Adventures expansion pack, and I just loaded that. I'm reading books I got for my birthday and Christmas, magazines, and I'm slowly getting back to my sewing so the grandgirls will have their Spring dresses before they outgrow them. I started them last August.

Fortunately, while I'm at the house, my daughter and her husband will be there to help, so I'm hoping it won't be too bad. But I'm taking my Sony Handi Cam and my digital camera as it will be the last time we see it. I'm already needing Kleenex as I write this.

Sigh.
