I was thinking of heading down to Octoberfest this year because it's a great time. I was there about 5 years ago, stayed downtown and after octoberfest we went to the Blue Dome Area.
I felt like this area was really weird, it was poorly lit and kind of dead. Is this area a little more vibrant now? Is there another bar area/vibrant place to go to after the festival that is not in a stripmall or suburb setting?

Thanks

Blue Dome is very different now than it was 5 years ago. Then there was pretty much only McNellies and Arnies. Now there is El Guapo (Mexican with a rooftop patio), Yokozuna (Japanese/Sushi), Joe Momma's (Pizza), Alley Blues (BBQ), Fassler Hall (German), Blue Dome Diner and Dilly Deli (Lunch/Brunch). Those are the restaurants with a new local farm to table concept opening in a few weeks - Juniper at 3rd & Elgin.

As for bars and nightlife there are lots of newer places: Enso (Lounge), Electric Circus (Dance Club), Dirty's Tavern (Sports Bar), Dust Bowl (Bowling Alley/Lounge) and of course McNellies with its massive beer selection.

The area is still developing and has lots of parking lots and a few vacant buildings but it's come a long way from 5 and especially 10 years ago. There is talk that an Alamo Drafthouse-style movie theater is the next big development in Blue Dome, that would be great.

If you come for Oktoberfest you might also check out Brookside or Cherry Street, those are popular spots to keep partying after the festival.
