Here are the highlights of what they do:

Oklahoma American Veterans News (OAVN) is dedicated to finding ways to help others using items that others don’t want. (That Sunday coupon insert --kept out of the trash or recycle bins-- might have a coupon for $.50 toilet paper or $.25 off on a can of chili. Coupons can be a real blessing in stretching grocery money when finances are tight.)

  • They gladly accept “re-gifts” (those items you may have received from a co-worker or great-aunt that, while nice gifts, are simply not to your taste) for their Christmas Store. Our Dot’s Christmas Store project provides gifts for hospitalized Veterans at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Hospital, who cannot leave their bed to shop for loved ones. Receiving a gift (free of charge) to give their sweetheart or their child (brought right to their hospital bed) warms many a heart and brings a grateful smile.
  • OAVN has no paid officers; only volunteers (because they believe that what is donated is meant to go toward helping veterans, their families –and others in need.)
  • They try to be creative in figuring out what they can use to help others, instead of calling people to ask for donations. They are happy, though, when opening envelopes of coupons to find one has a few dollars to help with the cost of mailing the boxes of coupons to the overseas military bases.
  • They are also working to help the children of needy families again this Christmas. The small town where these families live is located outside the metro Tulsa area so there isn't an Angel Tree to get their name on nor do they have access to the many wonderful organizations we have in and around Tulsa. They got the names from the school secretary in the hopes can get the kids some warm clothes and shoes. The kids “dream” gifts were things like a dress or baseball, a scooter or bike . “Re-gifts” are most welcome.
