Maybe that is just me being cynical but I pretty much figured that he and the "larger than life" construction worker were going to get picked.
Yes, yes, go ahead and put me "in my place". I stand by what I said. I would NOT do a "down home" thing for world class chefs. Sorry, that's just me. I am a perfectionist and make every effort to excel at whatever task I set out to do. Now, I will tell you, I'm no chef ... but IF I were to go on this show (or a show like this) I would practice a gourmet dish for about 3 months until it was perfect, then that is what I would present to a world class chef.

*Disclaimer* I have not seen last night's show yet because of finals. I will watch it tomorrow night.

I wasn't really trying to "put you in your place" as you say. My bad if I came off that way.

We tried to watch this show last night (on DVR) and could not get past the first 10 minutes of the show. We can't deal with the staged, contrived scenarios, so we will not be watching it. Neither me nor my husband like a lot of emotional crying stuff. I don't like that creepy stare Joe gives everyone after tasting their foods. The show is just TOO fake for us.

That one chick who tried "gourmet" presentation was given a second chance, they want down home, not world class, not yet anyway!! If they did a beef, or lamb wellington I don't think that would cut it! I'm still trying to catch the gist of the whole thing, but I like it.

We just watched the first episode tonight and we didn't record the second one. I thought it was pretty good. That one dish had enough grease to kill this entire town! I too liked the physician who lost her mother and the guy from Boston with the overconfidence. It was almost cute to see him crying and given a taste of humble pie. The guy who made the mac and cheese...even though that scene was staged, it was cute to see his family there with him when he got his apron. The woman from Louisiana warmed my heart. I wasn't there to taste her food, of course, but there was something genuinely nice and warm about her that made me like her from the second she walked into the judging room.

I can't compare week one to week two since I didn't see it.

I'm looking forward to this show. It'll be nice to see Ramsay without all the screaming--though I enjoy him on Hell's Kitchen too...it's just nice to see two sides of him is what I guess I'm saying. The DVR is now set for Tuesday nights

So far I like it - I like the restaurant owner judge - cracks me up with the monotone and the blank expressions

glad they are through the "auditions" and on to the actual show

I think what they want to highlight in this show is a progression - i think the producers want to be able follow a contestant from amateur home cook to a "master chef"

i think what they were looking for in the auditions were home style meals that still featured some technique and attention to detail

they didn't want some stick to your ribs slop plate and they didn't want someone reaching beyond their everyday means to try and produce a gourmet meal (a part of the problem with this is if you focus on putting together that one amazing gourmet dish no one knows if you can do anything else ... is that really representative of how you cook, or did you just learn one thing)

i think the challenges are going to go from basic techniques and dishes and end up being a bit more challenging when they will need to blend their existing technique and sensibilities to what they've learned during the show

i think there are a good group of personalities and it should be fairly entertaining

Still a bit too dramatic, but OK.

The chopping onion bit was boring and featureless, but I found the egg challenge to be interesting and it was impressive to see what people came up with. If it was me you would have gotten a fried egg over hard with bacon and biscuits.

why does he keep making the guy I like cry? I only like 2 or 3 of the contestants so far. The doctor, the Asian guy and the guy who made the steak and poached egg.

I'm sick of those crying scenes too! After seeing so much of it on the reality shows, it gets old quickly now.

You like the guy from Boston too? I wanna just go and give him a hug. They rip him a new one every episode! I am loving Avis, the last woman who went up for judging. Something about her personality just makes me warm and smile!
