There have been some brilliant comedy writers....from Seinfeld, I Love Lucy, MASH, Benny Hill, Saturday Night Live (30 yrs ago) and etc. On The Carol Burnett Show (years ago), they would pull off some really funny scenes, this is my favorite:

Briefly...all have seen the movie "Gone with the Wind", the scene where Scarlett chooses long green drapes at Tara to make a new dress....Well, the Burnett skit was a take-off...one of the characters called to "Scarlett" (Burnett) to come down the long curved stairs of "Tara", and she did so...

"wearing" green drapes that STILL WERE ON THE ROD....the rod was perched on her shoulders with the drapes all around (a nod to movie Scarlett taking drapes down for the dress)......

Back then shows were live, and it was said this skit got the longest ever laugh response in tv history. It was ROTF, LOL funny, and oh-so-clever!

What is your favorite?

OMG... I remember that one!! It was hilarious!!!!

I like (from the 80s), the SNL "church lady" skits. They were pretty funny.

Also, on Mary Tyler Moore when the clown died and everyone was laughing except Mary. Then, at church, everyone was serious and Mary kept giggling.

How could I forget MTM shows? I do remember that one....she is a true comedienne.....and all the shows that spun off her older and newer shows....Rhoda was funny too, I watched it religiously back then. (Oh, the Dick Van Dyke show!)

Seems to me the sitcoms today are just not funny. I do not watch a single one.....hope that does not say something weird about me....

I totally agree with your whole post!!

Todays sitcoms really aren't funny. I haven't watched any in years. I don't like the settings, the "plotlines", the wiseass kids, or anything else. It seems that one is just like the next.

I think sitcoms "jumped the shark" with the ending of shows like Roseanne, etc back in the early 90s.

While not all of the skits on In Living Color where great, there were some hilarious ones as I'm seeing watching the reruns these days - was too young to watch and/or get some of the humor when it was on originally as I was just a 'tween' as I think they refer to that age group today.

My fave was one I have been looking on youtube for, but can't find.
It was either SNL or SCTV. Probably in the early '80s. A fire and brimstone televangelist named "Billy". He kept saying something along the lines of . . . "and the Lord said to me, he said, Billy - I'm bummin' to the max" Cracked me up every time.

I went around for years using that line.

One of my favorite skits on In living color skits was "men on films" and in one particular skit Damon wayans character becomes straight - temporarily.
