Blood clots are still a known side effect of the pill, along with high blood pressure and strokes. I can't take them because of a history of migraines.

The early 1960-ish birth control pills were very high in estrogen. Over the years, they realized that less estrogen was needed to do the trick. But even in the late 60s, it was still high. My mother used to take them and she never got clots, but she always had a lot of leg pain and had to wear support hose and do a lot of walking. Of course, when she stopped taking them, all that magically went away.

The risk of clots is still there, but I think when they first came out, it was happening much more often.

I did. Wouldn't have missed it. As usual, it was an excellent episode. Just love that show!

Despite the many cast changes this is still one of the best shows I've ever watched. I just wish they gave us more than 8 episodes a year.

I've been distracted this season because the actress who plays Trixie is obviously pregnant, so she's in the big coat/carrying large bags phase of TV camouflage. Also, I thought that the reason that Trixie broke up with the dentist was weak and only done to get her back drinking (possibly to send her away when the actress has her baby.)

I got that impression also. It is one of the first lame storylines I've ever seen in this show.

It seems like everyone was off their game in this episode. The whole Magda plot was weird--why introduce her just to send her away? That could easily be a case of the week. And the family dealing with Huntington's disease, can you imagine Sister Evangelina allowing those kids to be walking around in dirty clothes or living in filth? She'd be rallying the troops and giving everyone baths and clean clothes.

While I love the show and haven't missed any episodes, the nuns (even if they are not Catholic) supporting a beauty pageant seemed really far fetched.

And let's face it, any type of state-run institution, such as an orphanage or a permanent home for the infirm who could no longer live with family were pretty dismal places during the 60s. These were places for the absolute last resort.
