1) Anchors do tend to read what's on the prompter. Doesn't mean they're not informed, but once you get to air, you presume everything has been vetted and edited by at LEAST two other people...so there should be no reason you can't trust what's on the prompter. So that's not really the ANCHOR'S fault.
2) I saw a short video of that part of the cast -- but for me what would be more interesting to see is did the anchor at any point give and slight facial or body reaction -- to give the impression that 'after the fact' she did realize something about this isn't quite right. Because THAT is the test of a great anchor -- HOW you react and WHAT you say once to do realize something went out on air that was NOT right...how do you recover. THAT"S the sign of a true professional.
Did anyone see a longer video show that?..her reaction. Or did SHE at the time never realize what she'd read. ANd even if she did, she'd have to decide in a split second whether to apologize THEN, or keep going, move on -- and let station management handle it later...after they have more info about what went wrong.
And of course, ultimately -- who gave the names to the station. IF the station got those names confirmed at the NTSB, WHO did that? an intern?
I have to admit I can't see a career gov't employee doing that. That gets you (at minimum) reprimanded....
The NTSB released the names --- it was on the news yesterday afternoon that the NTSB had some interns working and they were the ones who released the (wrong/fake/racist) names.
Nothing really funny about it. Those "jokes" are as old as the hills. Did the reporter, news editor and anchor just fall off the turnip truck?
