It irritates me to no end when my family 'surfs' while a show is on.

Either watch it or go elsewhere and do what you want.

Having said that I will have the TV on for company while I'm working (like cleaning or cooking) but that's not the same. I'm usually home alone and it's stuff on during the day (NO soap operas or talk shows - gag!). I'll leave HGTV or Food Network on while I'm wandering about dusting.
