Every year around this time we start seeing Save Our Show campaign which got me to think. It seems for me I either like a show that had no chance of renewal or had little to no chance of being canceled. This is true this year because the only shows I watched this year were the Simpsons, The Goldbergs, Mad Men, South Park, Daily Show and Colbert Report. Colbert, Daily Show and Mad Men are leaving on their own, while the Goldbergs, the Simpsons and South Park have good enough ratings not to be on the bubble (and all were renewed). In the past I liked shows on the bubble but it was assumed they were canceled and they were.
South Park wasn't really 'renewed'.. It's still under a.. I think they signed a 4 year contract extension in 2012 that keeps it on the air through S20, which is next year.
Simpsons.. They'll have to decide to quit that.. I don't think Fox has the sack to cancel it.
The only show that I can think of that I watched and was really 'on the bubble' was Jericho.. It got cancelled, then renewed and cancelled again.. And by the time the second cancellation came around, I didn't care.
Family Guy, i've been with since the start.. And it's been cancelled twice.
What I hate is when a show is cancelled and there's no word.. This only, generally, happens with cable shows.. Pitchmen, Verminators, The Burn with Jeff Ross and Locked Up Abroad are a few examples..
I can't watch a bubble show. That's why I avoid The CW and NBC. They've had so many failures that it's not worth getting into any of their shows.
I tend to watch more cable and premium cable shows. Those usually have more staying power (at least the ones I watch). The only time I got burned was watching Looking on HBO.
Now with Netflix and On Demand I'm more likely to let a few seasons air of a show and then start watching it. Take a few weeks to marathon it and then catch up to it's current season.
With the Simpsons it still has great ratings and hits the "correct" demographics. When it stops doing this is when a decision will be made to end the show but not for at least several years. It was just renewed for season 27 and 28 and I predict for season 29 and 30 as well. After that depends.
