I'm thinking of shows that had completely different casts or changed the make-up (general theme) of the show by the series end.

Roseanne - This was a totally different (and crappy) show at the end of its run. I can't tolerate the last couple of seasons.

A Different World - The cast was completely different at the end. I didn't like the new crop of students.

Army Wives - Bleh, I hated the new wives. I fell in love with the original girls.

LOL, I watched it on Netflix a couple of days ago. It's funny, in a nostalgic sort of way. I really liked Marissa Tomei and Lisa Bonet on the show, so I was bummed that they left early on. I liked Jalisa and Kim and I liked how Dewayne's relationship with Whitley developed.

MASH - The first two years it was similar to the far-superior film -- witty, fast-paced, irreverent -- but as time went on it pandered to the lowest common denominator and became the Alan Alda Show.

I remember in the 80s: Valerie Harper's show was "Valerie." Then she left, and it became "Valerie's Family." Then they just changed it to "The Hogan Family." I kind of think that if you start a TV show as a vehicle for a particular actor, and that actor leaves, you should end the TV show. But that's just me.

The NBC comedy series Nurses underwent a major transformation. What was originally a comfortable companion piece to The Golden Girls and Empty Nest on Saturday nights, Nurses suffered as it experienced yearly cast overhauls. Originally an ensemble piece similar to "It's A Living set in a hospital", it eventually became a star vehicle for Loni Anderson (the hospital administrator), with the nurses (remember them?) playing the supporting roles to her and to David Rasche (as a white-collar criminal doing community service at the hospital).

Oh, I remember Nurses! I'd completely forgotten about that show. I don't remember much of it and I know I didn't watch it for very long.

It had so many narrative re-sets and interchangeable cast members that you may very well have watched the entire series and not realized it.

They probably do not require as much explanation, but both Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley certainly fit this thread.

All in the Family. The last years were only a shadow of the first five years.
