To me Friends is equally New York albeit a more recent gentrified Manhattan. In the 1970s you wouldn't have found many people anything like Chandler, Monica etal., in NYC but nowadays there are plenty of young, pretty, 'regular' people there.
I'd also speculate that Friends has influenced many more young people from anytown USA to move to Manhattan.

Manhattan is certainly a lot safer than it was in the 1970s as well, and the gentrification is spreading beyond Manhattan now as well.
That said, neither show did a great job portraying how diverse NYC is overall.
