I have sometimes wondered why so many Sitcoms with a Family in it or about a Family have 3 Kids at most.? This is so common among those type of TV Shows. You don't see many with just 1, 2 or 4 and 5 Kids.

Actually, there were 3 Stone kids because, after Mary went off to college they adopted orphan "Patty" (who was Paul Petersen's real-life sister). Same with My Three Sons. The older son left the nest, and a spot had to be filled. Enter another adoptee, Ernie.
That happens more often with fewer kids. When the show lasts longer than expected, it gets silly with the family adopting distant relatives, and neighbor kids hanging around and ultimately moving in.

That's not actually true. I can think of a bunch of family sitcoms past and present just off the top of my head that had something other than 3 kids in the family.
I think if you really sat down and made a list you'd find it's all over the place.

Of course, if you add shows with 1 child, 2 children, 4, 5, past Eight is Enough and up to The Waltons, the combined number of those shows will exceed the number of shows that have three--because you're counting all the shows with 1, with 2, etc.
The point is that three is the magic number. There have been.more shows with three kids than shows with 1, or 2, or four....

I knew what the OP meant, I just don't think it's true. I went down a mental list of classic family sitcoms in my head and 3 kids wasn't standing out. That's all.
