I just think Malik was an extremely poor casting choice which is unusual for this show . He appears to be around twelve years old ( maybe even
slightly disabled ) and Deja looks almost old enough to be his mother. His being in Harvard is just too unbelievable to ponder .
There is no viable realistic chemistry between these two . They look silly together , actually .
yes, I to, am not fond of Malik's character, for many reasons, very poor casting in my book as well....and I agree with the age difference....
I would like Deja and Malik were responsible and smart enough to use birth control, but nothing is 100 percent If they lived together, there would be more frequent sex than the occasional weekend visit and more chances of getting pregnant. And who knows? Could Deja get jealous and tired of Malik’s kid and then want one of her own?
Interesting that when she visited him, Malik hardly had time for, yet he wants her to move and live with him, while he is a Harvard student and father.

With all of that tension, I don't think anyone had much of an appetite.
Deja is really immature. She is thinking with her hormones. Randall is especially close with Deja since they were both adopted. She goes to Beth for "girl advice" but for life advice, she turns to Randall. He's her father and he's being protective, just like a father would to any daughter.
With Malik being 18, and Deja still 17, isn't sex between them statutory rape? Or maybe the laws are different in Pennsylvania.
At any rate there is NO way anyone I know would allow their 17 year old daughter to leave high school early, and move several hours away to live with her boyfriend. If my parents had let me do that, later when the relationship ended and my life was a mess from dropping out of school, I'd be furious with them for not giving me better guidance. Even if Deja does it anyway, she needs to know, for the rest of her life, that her parents tried to steer her right.

No, the age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16. Even if it wasn't, states have Romeo and Juliet laws that say a person can legally have consensual sex with a minor provided that he or she is not more than a given number of years older. That way it's not suddenly illegal for a 17 year old to have consensual sex with their 16 year old girlfriend just because of a birthday.
