Very Shakespearian quality to the dialogue, and a really interesting vision for the monarchy. Also Tim Pigott-Smith's last role. I remember him as the sadistic military man in The Jewel in the Crown-wow, was he nasty in that one!
I don't know if I'd say "very" Shakespearian. It was more like Shakespeare lite. It would turn on and off in a weird disjointed way. Like they didn't want to turn up the dial all the way because they didn't think modern audiences would understand. It was distracting to me.
What has been more entertaining than the show has been the comments on the Masterpiece Facebook page. They've been making promotional posts all day, and judging by the comments on those posts, the response has been overwhelmingly negative.
Watched about 15 minutes and quit. Anything "Masterpiece" I usually love. This is an exception........
^^^ Ditto. Why were they all talking like the court of Henry VIII? I couldn't take it.
I am very disappointed because Masterpiece is usually right on the money and stunning.
I thought it was interesting. I didn't see the play that it was based on, but was considering to go see it. I don't think I actually liked it, but it held my attention. I think it might have been more interesting if the dialog was in iambic pentameter throughout.
Oh, forgot that Tim Pigott-Smith played that villain in Jewel in the Crown. One of the most evil characters ever.

Same. It was pretty painful to watch.
