Love Bob (and his son, too) although I'm not crazy about his painting style. He apparently stole the idea for an instructional painting show from some other guy. I'm not sure if the first guy was on TV, but Bob is said to have used his methods almost exactly, and subsequently became far more popular and well-known than the other man.
I agree that watching his show is very soothing, and almost hypnotic. I also find it amusing to watch him on YouTube and then read the funny comments from all the other blissed-out Bob Ross viewers!
Yeah, I have heard that he learned the technique from some other painter. I think that guy wasnt happy about Ross' success based on the technique taught him.
Bob Ross' teacher was the German painter William (Bill) Alexander. Does anyone remember his PBS show, "The Magic of Oil Painting"? Alexander was the one who invented (or at least popularized) the wet-on-wet technique, and the whole style of the "Happy little cabin" etc is also Alexander's, with a German accent. We used to watch his show, and thought he was so obnoxious that he became cute and endearing...

I remember watching the German guy on PBS when I was a little girl, he scared me. I also watched Bob Ross too when he came along.
I don't paint. Dude's hair is kind of funny (or creepy). I'd watch him as a teen for 5 min. (or 25 min.) in the 80s (I think it was on in the afternoon)....not even sure why. I'd either fall asleep, fall into a weird zone....or snap out of it and get on to something else.
<>Anyone else?
He is a fascinating character. One theory, however improbable, is that he was a serial killer who was leaving clues about where all the bodies are buried. Think about it.
"Fred Rogers was a sniper, too."
