I think Northern Exposure would definitely succeed today. IIRC, Northern Exposure was originally a summer special that CBS aired for a few weeks during the summer of 1990. (which was a pioneer move in programming during a time when nearly all network schedules from late-April-September consisted of repeats from the previous season). It proved to do so well in the ratings that CBS ordered it as a regular series over a year later in the autumn of 1991. It lasted four of five years beyond that. The show kind of had a "Newheart" esque quality to it, (which incidentally had wrapped up a nine-season run on CBS earlier that spring) and I liked the base plot of a recent med school graduate from New York going to practice a small town in Alaska.

Well I guess my query in this topic will be answered. (Maybe). It was announced recently that a revival of Northern Exposure was in the the works. Nothing is final yet, but, some of the original characters will be making a return if the series is picked up. I hope it is a go, as NE was one of my favorite TV series of all time.

I started watching it again recently after looking at this thread. It's been so long it's all new again. It really was a great production.

I don’t want them to remake it, I just want to binge watch the original.

I think it could work as a reboot; there's always an audience for a good 'fish out of water' story. Trouble is that it arguably had one of the best ensemble casts in the history of television. How do you replicate that?

NE always reminded me of the film Local Hero, which predated it by seven years. I always wondered if it was the inspiration for the series.

And that's the hitch. Same as the Frasier revival being bandied about.

You had a show that captured magic in a bottle, a moment in time, with a cast that was just amazing. The stars aligned, with the writers and the cast and the setting, all coming together to make TV magic.

It's so hard to do it again. Just look at Roseanne, or Murphy Brown, or so many others.

I wish they would just leave it be. But the Money Gods rule TV Land, and they never saw a bad idea they wouldn't try.

I agree, the alignment of stars makes the tv magic.

Ok, now having said that....I truly hope it can be funny and quirky as the original....it's the writing, and the writers are apparently returning....anyone can play most of the roles.

I don't know if I would watch a remake/reboot with a different cast or not. Probably not.
