Over a volcano? Won't the substance being emitted create a problem on the wire?
Go to the mysuncoast link above and he explains that his father called him and said the gases were causing issues on the cable and they are going with 1 inch cable instead of the normal 5/8 - 3/4 inch.

Oh, didn't read the link, Howard. Sorry and thanks!
What about the extreme heat?
Saw a volcano IMAX show at the Science Center. To stand on the edge of this hellhole, they had to wear hear suits
The volcano he crosses is the Masaya which continually emits large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas.
So what could go wrong. There is a 1.0 earthquake which jars the metal structure holding the end of the cable. 1800 feet and 1 inch thick must be a very heavy cable. I don't know the reliability of the devices on each end that holds the cable.
His gas mask leaks and his eyes burn or he passes out. The grease like emission from the volcano causes slippage. Wind, limited visibility. He knows exactly where his toes and heel should touch the cable so even with limited visibility he should be able to feel his way across.
The video of the walk over Niagara Falls shows some sort of device over the cable and being pulled along by a cord attached to his waist, etc. This may or may not have been a safety device to prevent a total fall.
He was not followed by one of those type devices over the Canyon.
---------------------------------
Here is a couple minutes of his walk over the Grand Canyon. Which was only 1500 feet.
One note is if he doesn't make it, there will be no mess to clean up. It will be like the alka seltzer commercial; Plop, fix and that will be all it is.
But I sure hope he makes it and I will watch.
I used to think my job was dangerous at times. But this is going a bit too far.
