The Irregulars on Netflix is an 8 episode fantasy set in Victorian Britain. Some comment on history
  1. The Irregulars were described as an all boy street urchins employeed by Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. They certainly did not have a black boy or an Asian girl.
  2. Prince Leopold , Queen Victoria's youngest son and the only one with hemophilia, was born on 7 April 1853. His trip around the city is on his birthday, but the story does indicate which one.
  3. Billy indicates that the population of London is 4 million in the first episode. That would place the time as the early 1870s. Historical census of London was:
    1871 3,840,595
    1881 4,713,441
  4. The first underground tube station opened on 10 January 1863. Aldgate Station featured in the story opened on 18 November 1876 and there indeed was a "plague pit" discovered on the site with over 1000 bodies. However, there was no "Circle Line" until 1949.
  5. Prince Leopold married Princess Helena on 27. Apr. 1882 and died when he fell on his head on 28. Mar. 1884, just 30 days before his second anniversary. He left two children.
  6. Marleybone town hall mentioned in episode 1 where they look up the birth certificates of the babies is right next to Baker Street, but it is a 4 mile walk to Aldgate station
  7. About 150 new workhouses were built between 1840 and 1875.

Of course - The Irregulars is not based on a true story. I don't think anyone is going to think that.
It's a tale of fearsome monsters with supernatural powers and an inter-dimensional battle to save the world
Only some characters and actions are loosely resembling actual facts.

Part of the fun of historical fantasy is to have it fit into real history properly.

Another recent series, DaVinci's Demons, took great pains to match known historical facts. Of course in the periods when DaVinci's whereabouts were unknown to history, the fantasy had him sailing to South America with Amerigo Vespucci and beating Colombus to the New World.

Dealing with the plague pits was and is a genuine problem for the underground in London. Even though the bodies were buried 500 years earlier the thought of machinery churning through them was repulsive to the Victorians. There was also some concern that the bodies may foul the machinery.

The original line with 7 stations extended from Paddington to Farringdon. Then 3 years later Barbican and Moorgate were added; then 9 years later Liverpool Station, and finally less than 2 years after that was Aldgate which was the first one to hit a plague pit with over 1000 bodies.

Agreed. Historical Fantasy means you change some things, of course. It doesn't mean that the history no longer matters. And if there is a change, there better be a reason for it.

If Princess Louise returns for season #2, historically she was married on 21 March 1871 at the age of 23, so presumably she was married during the time of the season #1. She was 5 years older than Leopold.

Relations between Princess Louise and her husband were strained, and, despite the queen's attempts to keep them under one roof, they often went their separate ways. He was widely rumored to be homosexual. Louise was an early advocate for women's rights including the right to vote. Louise was determined to be seen as an ordinary person and not as a member of the court. When travelling abroad, she often used the alias "Mrs Campbell" as her husband was John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll. The possibility of her having a flirtation with Spike is reasonable.

From 15 November 1878 - 27 October 1883 she lived in Canada as her husband was appointed Governor General. While there she made the idea of vacationing in Bermuda popular. Lake Louise in Alberta is also named after her, as is Mount Alberta.

Louis was a dedicated artist, a painter and a sculptor.

Louis and her husband became close during the last three years of his life. He died before WWI when Louise was age 66. Louise died at age 91 just as WWII was beginning. She never had children.

Finally watched the first episode. I doubt I'll watch more. Impressive cast and production values aside, the writing is awful. Anachronisms galore. And it is the most CWish show I have ever seen that isn't actually on the CW. Bad teen soap opera. Too bad. The cast is really good, but they are wasted on this dreck.
