If you are a fan of the actor that played McNulty (Dominic West), I HIGHLY recommend you watch 'The Affair'.

John Doman (William Rawls in the Wire) is also in the show. He plays the father in law of Noah (Dominic West).

I really liked this show when it came out but I recently tried watching it again and I just couldn't get into it again.

I cannot get into it no matter how much people rave and I'd like to!

I rarely re-watch movies or shows. I rarely re-read books. I know my "taste" in shows changes over the years. I really doubt I would like The Wire, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, etc. as much as I enjoyed them my first watch if I tried to re-watch. Also I think that major productions like Game of Thrones, as an example, have jaded my expectations for series or even movies.

For me I think that well developed (and believable) characters are what makes a series memorable. The Wire had many characters that I will never forget.

I thought liking that actor from the Affair would help me like The Wire. Nope. I do like that the Affair is back on. They did the split versions a bit differently this time. I can't tell which one is right. I guess somewhere in between like IRL.

Well said. AFAIK, I've never re-watched a series. You just can't duplicate that experience of watching something the first time. And the ones you mention are great series.

And your comment on The Wire's characters... that's the secret sauce that made that show so incredible. Characters you could see, taste, feel, smell.

Opposite for me. Loved him in The Wire. Watched The Affair, and it really didn't grab me (I gave it the entire first season), and he didn't do anything for me. Probably the writing though, and not him as an actor.

Michael K. Williams in both The Wire and Boardwalk Empire played characters that have really stuck with me. Many other actors in both (and other great) series......

I loved The Wire. Just watched the entire series over the last two weeks. I was sad to get to the final episode.

Seen most of the seasons. I know for some reason this show is really loved by liberals but it actually doesn't feel like liberal propaganda despite David Simon being liberal in many ways (though not all ways......I think he did say the Baltimore cops in the Freddie Gray case shouldn't have been prosecuted and he seems to blame that and the riots for making the police afraid to do their jobs).

The Wire actually doesn't vilify the police and does make the drug dealers very evil especially the Barksdale family. It also shows Baltimore's Democrat establishment as corrupt, incompetent and dysfunctional and in the political episodes it even points out the racism of black voters being hesitant to vote for a white candidate. I'm surprised more people didn't claim it was a racist show since it was really about a white cop hero (antihero I guess) going after black gangsters.

Although.....McNulty never went TOTALLY off the books like Jack Bauer in 24, Jim Gordon in Gotham, or Dwayne Pride in parts of NCIS New Orleans......

Your theory that there's a political agenda is off base.

And your claim that the show is really about "a white cop hero (antihero I guess) going after black gangsters" is not accurate.

The Wire is a realistic portrayal of life in Baltimore. Nothing more. Nothing less.
