I love the Hoarders show. I have some friends that will not watch it since it makes them sick to their stomach. It fascinates me though. My heart goes out to these people. It is so terrbily sad. From a cleaning perspective, it goes WAY beyond just removing years of their accumulated stuff - the structure of the house, in so many cases, seems to be beyond repair. Did you see the original show where the little boy was so frantic to get the house cleaned in the 2 days allotted? He didn't want the cleaning team to leave. God help him. It's heart-breaking.

On the other hand, I cannot watch Intervention. I find it so awfully disturbing. You can just see them spiraling down into hell. And their poor loved ones. What a terrible thing to watch - someone you love just slowly killing themselves.

Hoarders show tonight is disturbing. It just amazes me how people can get that way. It's sad. Is it considered a disease? Some of these people have apartments/houses and don't work. Maybe they are collecting?

It's a subset of OCD.

The ones with no money can always find stuff in the trash, by the side of the road, etc.

My elderly father-in-law is one, he's as bad as some of the ones they've shown. Totally in denial about it, and totally doesn't care about how it affects the family.

Here's an idea for TLC: send the "American Pickers" to the Hoarders houses. They could pay the Hoarders for some of the junk.

Smile Hoarders

My FIL hoards stuff but you can walk around his house. He gets upset if you touch anything. It makes me sick but I have tried, believe me.

When he goes for a walk, he picks up old junk/crap people drop on the road -paper clips, driver's licenses, pack of cigs (nothing in it - just the pack), stuff like that.

He is 87 and my husband and I both dread the day. What we would love to do is sit down with him and go through some of these memories with him. I just lost my mom and going through her stuff - I was stunned at what I didn't know.

My husband is an only child so it's just him - no one else.

She kept every letter given to her - sort of a hoarder herself.

I think it comes from being overwhelmed.

Since today is a holiday & I'm home from work I figured I would clean out some things. I hate clutter & my house is only 670 sq. ft so I don't have much...well...I started slowing down so I've turned on hoarders for some motivation!

Whew! That's a motivating show

I wish they would give the people more time with professional help, at least a week, 2 days seems stressful even watching. I know it's not a makeover show, but I kind of wish there was more of a transformation & also a follow-up to show how they're doing 1 month later..3 months later..6 months later..etc.

Love the show though!

Courtney

Addressing Addicted: I prefer her way of doing the intervention, which is the "no surprise" method. She also seems to be more grounded in what I consider reality, meaning I don't hear any religious mumbo-jumbo from her.
