Yeah, there was a post earlier that stated that Vern was faking his anger. I don't think so. The obvious lack of talent in these contestants IS embarrassing to the shows producers, judges, and the network overall - and can risk the shows renewel next season.
I really have noticed that ever since the first year the quality of the contestants (including the winners) seems to be sinking and sinking each and every year. No one has come close to David Bromstad either in quality of work or success.

the contestants are definitely lame, but i think the new format of the show is just as much of a problem. the challenges have been terrible, it seems like the contestants have less time and money to work with, or something else is preventing them from making more substantial changes to their spaces (i don't think it's a coincidence that they basically just paint and decorate in every single challenge), the focus is on interpersonal drama instead of process for both the judges and the contestants, they never design for real people's homes, etc.
the losing design really was horrendous this week, but the winning design was pretty much just mediocre. i thought the idea of using a lipstick stained coffee mug in the design was out and out gross. hey, why not some dirty panties in the corner too?
oh and donald trump jr looks like a sketch comedy actor dressed up as a corporate douchebag.
oh yeah and it didn't occur to me that the timeframe and budget aren't revealed on the show anymore. who on earth made the decisions to make all of these stupid changes to the show? it's not like it had poor ratings in the first place. i can't think of one change this season that is for the better.
Well, I have to honestly say if Tom hadn't been sent home Sunday night, it would have been my last time watching this season. How much creative design effort does it take to paint an entire bathroom dark blue?? I'm simply not seeing any unique creativity this season on the part of ANY of them.
That thing that what's-her-face did with the strips of the yellow taxi bag was so stupid. Those "curtains" were godawful. I could have done better and I'm not a designer.

I'm not watching this year because I swore off after last year, which I believe was fixed from day one. But I have seen a couple of brief ads. It looked to me as if all the contestants are fairly young. So how much design experience could they have?
I'm guessing a Mark Burnett-chosen cast would be composed of equal parts young and good looking, trouble-making and good looking, and flamboyant and good looking. Nothing whatsoever to do with experience as a designer. But maybe some T and A and certainly some colorful hissy fits.
Are they still promising the winner a show of their own? Maybe by "show" they don't mean "series" anymore, just "a show." If the contestants are as talentless as it sounds from what I've read, none of them could sustain a series.

I don't think their ages are much different than last season. If anything, I think the overall group is older this season. Tom is 46. The others are in their 30s for the most part.
Before the season started, I viewed their bios and looked at their portfolios, and some of them actually have some nice projects under their belts. That's why I don't understand what has happened this season. It just seems like they are turning out...well, not "crap"...but just run-of-the-mill fixing up stuff with coats of paint and attempting to make art that doesn't really "do it" for me. I have yet to see anything this season that comes remotely close to what we saw last season with Dan and Antonio. Those guys have creative flair, and they utilized it. This season just makes me want to yawn.

I definitely don't see anything from any of them that makes me think they could have an ongoing series like David Bromstad's Color Splash. A couple of them - maybe Michael, perhaps Courtland - have the drive and personality to carry a show, but I'm not sure what KIND of show it would be.
