Can't help you with the BVI. There is one bookstore on St Thomas in the USVI - relatively small but reputable. Don't know if there's one on St Croix but there's none on St John.
Generally the waters here aren't conducive to body surfing or surfing period. There are a few surfers here who run out when there's a North swell but the ops are few and far between. With most of the wave action over reefs, probably not a good idea to body surf at the best of times!
When I was in St. John in 2011, there was a small but wonderful used bookstore in the same complex as the Starfish Market. The owner is friendly, the books are cheap and the coffee is amazing. Can't go wrong.
We did a little body surfing a couple days at Cinnamon Bay when the waves got big enough but I think it's pretty tame usually. My knowledge of the place is limited but I hope this helps!
Body Surfing and Surfing in general is condition dependent. Tortala has has world class surfing on the north side. St john surfing is mostly reefs (os boards not body). St thomas has great surfing...about 10 days a year.
There are 2 bookstores on st. Croix, maybe more but ihave been to 2, both in C'sted. Can't speak to surfing although we enjoy watching the para-sailing activity on the south shore inSTX.
