Some gringos have for years expressed the fear that Puerto Rico as a state will be like Cataluña or Quebec. This is really a dumb ass thought.

The only resemblance of these two provinces to Puerto Rico is their gung ho resistance to become a has been nation. They defend their culture and language to avoid becoming a non entity in a wildly exploding world of re-born nationalism. .

On the surface one might think that Puerto Rico is similar to these provinces , however there are marked differences.

Canadá and Spain depend on the economic presence of Quebec and Cataluña. Both provinces are economic motors of Canada and Spain. Madrid is willing to go to war to maintain Cataluña, same Canadá with Quebec.

Puerto Rico is the other extreme. It once was the jewel in the crown of national defense during the Cold War. It was a tax haven for companies not willing to pay their fair share of federal income taxes.

It was once Americas answer to Communism. A happy island of grateful and loyal folks who never peeped if gringos stepped all over them. They just smiled and kept on drinking their piña coladas.

As the happy colonial Paradise began to fail, as globalization threw the island employment into free fall, now the colonials want to become a state and participate of all the goodies of American socialism.

The only problem is that different from Cataluña or Quebec Puerto Rico HAS NOTHING TO OFFER the richest nation on earth. If you ask most Puerto Ricans about this they look at you at say, “But we are American citizens and the US has to take us in, no ifs or buts”.

After hurricane Maria most gringos never knew Puerto Ricans were citizens. On TV they saw scenes and people that looked like poor Cubans and Haitians after a hurricane. They didn’t look like folks in Kansas or Oklahoma after a Tornado. They couldn’t believe it was america. Nonetheless to dissipate this image the statehood big wigs took Trump to Guaynabo, an upper class neighborhood to show gringos a different and white Puerto Rico. Nonetheless Trump blew it by throwing toilet paper, upps paper towels, to eager and loyal Puerto Ricans with outstretched arms.

Nonetheless, no matter how hard statehooders try , they can’t seem to convince Americans or Congress that Puerto Rico is as economically important as Quebec or Cataluna to give them more political representative power than 24 white states. That’s a big problem.

The economy in PR used to be very good if I'm not mistaken. That's probably why the desire to become a state grew. The US doesn't want to admit a blue state .

So let me get this straight. You believe that "gringos" for years have expressed fears about PR becoming a state, but yet you think most people in the mainland don't know PR are citizens?

I guess calling us 'gringos' shows your true colors though lol

What are you talking about? The US is wide open to brown people who aren't even American. Mexicans, Filipinos, other Latin Americans, West Indians, various Africans and so on.

Many Puerto Ricans are far more American and far "whiter" than the vast, vast, majority of immigrants who are pouring into the country already.

But on the other point you are 100% on the mark. The powers-that-be sure don't want any more blue people.

Puerto Ricans can wish for whatever but it will be those from the 50 states that will decide. And I don't know if a ruined entity which will suck a tremendous amount of resources will be something that Americans want.

The fact remains that while most Puerto Ricans might consider themselves to be white most Statesiders see it as a brown society with people with an alien culture and an alien language.

you can say the same about many cities in the states.....When I go to Los Angeles, California I can go weeks without seeing a white person. .......go check out New Mexico.....you can go days and weeks without seeing a White person or listening to English. Hell, is some places in California and New Mexico they won't give you service unless you speak Spanish because most of them "NO SPEAKY INGLISH" or refuse to speak it.

you want to fix the mess in Puerto Rico or want a massive emigration of Puerto Ricans to the states?.......either way, the U.S. owns P.R. and the people in it when the U.S. gave them U.S. Citizenship in 1917 and the federal government is not in the business of giving real estate away.

I live there for years and I know the root of the problem........and until it gets fix or they seriously attempt to tackle the root of the problem and the anti-American left in the island doesn't have political power then statehood talk is a waste of time.

You can't consider a territory a state when half or close to it of the electorate are anti-americans lefties and socialists.....that B.S. has to be dealt with internally in P.R.......they would never go for independence, they are too chicken and know better....why do you think the independent movement is at 3%?...they are sure the loudest but in time to take action and do it they can't get past 3% and go back sucking on federal aid or worse yet, come to the states to talk trash about the U.S. and how bad it treats P.R.

It's frustrating living there dealing with them......many of them want the benefits of the United States but don't want the responsibility......those are the left anti-Americans in the island and then complain why they can't vote for President and don't have political power at the federal and have this victimization "ay bendito" culture where everything is a travesty.

CA is already a state so its current demographics matter not. Plus its annexation was due to its ample resource base, strategic buffer against Mexico and its access to the Pacific.

Now name one thing that PR has that people in the remaining 50 states wants? The Cold War is over so its no longer needed to protect the Panama Canal.

I don't know why you mention a potential influx of Puerto Ricans as if it is akin to hordes of Central Americans running over the border. If the prospect of more Puerto Ricans on the mainland is horrendous to those living there rest assured that having PR as the 51st state definitely will be.

As of now most in the 50 states see PR as a burden and don't want additional burdens, given uncertainties of the federal budget.

Welfare programs does not equal American socialism

I live in New Mexico and there are a lot of bilingual Hispanics here, mostly Hispanos (as opposed to Mexicans). And more than half of them are full on güeros (fair complected, European heritage).

The only places you can go weeks without seeing a white person or hear English is in the house of some moreno (dark skinned, dominant indigenous genes) Mexican immigrant family, and then only if you choose not to go out the door. And a lot of the Mexican immigrant community here is from Chihuahua and a few of them are güeros, too.

I mean, New Mexico's total population is barely 2 million. You are simply not going to be able to find large immigrant Mexican, Spanish-only communities here. Even if you are on a street with a lot of immigrant families, you are only a block away from English speakers of any race or heritage.

And the bolded statement is full of BS, too.

I don't know about California, but you don't know squat about New Mexico.
