I am visiting my long lost brother who resides in St Thomas in a couple of weeks. I'd like to bring him and his wife a housewarming gift (something small-no more than $50) from the mainland (USA). Is there anything that isn't easily obtained in the Virgin Islands that I could bring? It could be food, liquor, anything really......

I should say we were both raised in mainland USA.

With internet shopping we can get pretty much everything we want these days. Some people crave Krispy Kreme donuts, some crave Taco Bell - it's such a mixed bunch of things that people miss. You're probably better off asking him directly, or else get him a gift certificate that he can use online. Hope you enjoy a great visit here!

I can tell you 2 things you don't have to take him: liquors and perfume. These two are plentiful in the Virgin Islands, with the best variety you can ever imagine.

We visited St. Thomas and St. John last month. We stopped by a grocery store in St. Thomas to get a few things to cook for breakfast everyday and noticed the limited variety of foods like coffee, cookies, candy, etc. Everything was quite expensive because it has to be transported. I was talking to one of the mainlanders who had moved down there. He said ice cream was for rich people and the 'cheap' milk is reconstituted milk from powder. I'd suggest some good flavored coffees or a variety of more expensive snacks like the more expensive cookies or chocolates you can buy in the grocery stores back home. You might even get some of the hard cheeses that could be left out at room temperature so you could carry it in your luggage.

I'd just make sure there aren't any restrictions on particular foods like meat or fresh fruits before you bring it down.

I had the most wonderful surprise last night! Regular visitors from New Jersey who come here annually for a couple of weeks arrived yesterday evening, got their suitcases unpacked and came right over to my place bearing a box of REAL tomatoes (five varieties of the more than 20 the husband grows himself) and ears of New Jersey white corn, all freshly picked right before their flight. You have no idea what a fantastic treat this is!

Default Tomatoes

So would it be a good idea to bring tomatoes and corn?

No problem. Incoming is not a problem, outgoing is.
