With regards to a Boricua being the first hispanic in space, that's not so. That honor goes to Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez. He did this in September of 1980. Hey...at least he was a Caribeño.
This past year, I was in Orlando, Florida, and the media was clammoring about a Puerto Rican Astronaut, then I saw an article in the NY Times Magazine, also depicting it. Maybe he was not the first one, but according to these resources we have an Astronaut that is Puerto Rican!!!!!!!!

That's quite a generalization. New York has immoral and moral people just like Puerto Rico, just like anywhere in the world.

Default Stumbled in here, wish I didn't

Wow, really?

Let's celebrate and be proud of our heritage, AND PUERTO RICAN POWER

how would you feel about this statement:
Let's celebrate and protect our heritage: WHITE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be proud to be Americans! A country that welcomes diversity to be
a part of AMERICA! If your country and heritage was so fabulous, would
you be here? Be proud of AMERICA, being AMERICAN, and quit being
racist with your statements. You aren't takin' over America, you are
being offered an opportunity to fit in and act right.

Imagine a white person went to your motherland of Puerto Rico, and
assume PR was open to diversity in government. Suppose that
a white person, capable or not, in office for the right reason or not,
was put in a similar position. Yeah represent....white power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How does that sound to you? Racist, exactly. As a white person it's
getting really old to see and hear all this crap.

Guess what.. you want to be somewhere where Puerto Ricans run government, and you can celebrate your heritage!! There is such
a place it's called PUERTO RICO head on over there and enjoy it,
OTHERWISE "CELEBRATE AMERICA". BE PART OF THE SOLUTION, NOT THE
PROBLEM.

Chacho Keva: I found him in Wikipedia. His name is Jose M. Acaba, age 42, born in Inglewood, California, of Puerto Rican Parents, from Hatillo.

He was assigned to the crew of the STS-119, as a Mission Specialist Educator on March l5th, 2009!!!!!!!!!!! VIVA PUERTO RICO and America...............

Wow you got the messege wrong. It is just because of Sotomayor, Rubies was saying that he or she was proud. I do not believe that is a bad thing. Do you? Now, aren't you proud that US is one of the most powerful countries in the world? I bet that you are proud to be from the US. This is the same concept. So I do not know why are you saying statements that does not makes sense? Do you feel jealous that Sotomayor is in DC now?

Now since I am from New York, I am more proud of her that she is from NY than being Puerto Rican. However, I am proud to be a New Yorker and to be Puerto Rican at the same time. However, I represent more NY. There is nothing wrong in expressing what one feels. Also this forum is for the U.S. Territories which includes Puerto Rico. So Rubies is in the right forum... So I say Puerto Ricans and New Yorkers let us celebrate

THE ONLY ONE BEING RACIST HERE IS YOU!!!!!!!!!! I am an AMERICAN of PUERTO RICAN descent. And I am expressing my feelings for Ms. Sotomayor. It seems her winning one of the most powerful seats in AMERICA, bothers you more than anything else..........

If being proud of my heritage bothers you...........SO BE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!

I was born in Puerto Rico and I don't feel proud because the next Supreme Court justice is latina or whose parents are from the same island I was born in.

Being proud of some sort of a heritage (might as well highlight the inauthenticity in this case) is extremely ignorant since there's no accomplishment being had. Also, I shiver when I'm reminded there's a parade in New York that celebrate Puerto Rican heritage.

I'm offended inasmuch as I'm ashamed.

I do not understand why are you ashamed. What are you ashamed of?

After careful philosophical offline examination of this topic and at the danger of being scrutinized I'll make the following statement.

The accomplishments of Judge Sotomayor and the astronaut who happened to be born in Puerto Rico represent individualist achievements. I too come from a small country where people take individuals' accomplishment as that of the nation. This is not so and should not be mistaken with any nationalistic movement. There is no nationalistic science movement and there is no nationalistic judicial movement in Puerto Rico. Remember that Judge Sotomayor was chosen and did nothing out of extraordinary to prove herself worthy of her position. I am sure that there are plenty of other candidates that can hold her position. Personally I think that a nation such as Puerto Rico should aim high and should strive to produce individuals at the rate that is comes as NO surprise that a Puerto Rican went to space, that a Pueran Rican went accomplished this or that. Notice that Judge Sotomayor does not even have the Puerto Rican last name. The fact that she was NOT born in Puerto Rico and then has grow up somewhere else should not be confused with any nationalistic feeling. Do you think that her main priority is Puerto Rico, I don't think so. I am not form Puerto Rico, but I can equate the feeling of pride that you uphold. (In the same breath) All of Puerto Ricans should strive to uphold standards that reflect their patriotic feeling and should not confuse gains of individuals with gains of Puerto Rico. As far as being inspired by her nomination. If Judge Sotomayor was educated in the Puerto Rican university system then yes, I would be inspired. She was educated somewhere else, which should be a claim to shame that in order to succeed one has to leave the island. I am sorry if my honesty has offended you, but since I live here now I feel obligated to help this nation and the only help is though honest assessment.
