I was fired about 6 weeks ago from my part time job at a grocer. I only worked there for about 3 weeks at that point, and went off unemployement to work there, even though i was making less. I had to miss work due to having to go to the emergency room. I spoke to my manager beforehand, who told me it would not be an issue if i missed that day. The ER I had to go to was over 45 minutes away ( i am a disabled vet who was medically discharged last year at the age of 25 due to a combat injury). I showed up at my next shift, a few days later, with the drs note and spoke to my manager who indicated no issues. however, about halfway through the shift, i was pulled into her office and told i was being let go because of the absence. I was floored and very upset. I went to the unemployment office, where i refiled my claim. I only worked about 3 weeks and only made about 500 during those weeks. I have been waiting while they investigated the claim, and on Friday, it finally disappeared from my claimant website. I went in to find out what was going on and all they told me was I would be getting a letter telling me the outcome. However, when I look at all my weekly claims up to this point, they now say denied, so I assume I lost the case. However, what I dont understand is my maximum benefit amount went up over $5000? How do I go about an appeal if it comes down to that, as it doesnt seem fair I was fired, let alone denied unemployment. I also know two people who were fired from the health care field due to "resident abuse" and they were approved for unemployment on the first go, which doesnt seem fair either.
It seems that if you didn't receive any written warning (proof for their side) or even verbal (your word against theirs) that they will not be able to deny you unemployment, so yes, always appeal.
Also- as a disabled veteran- are you aware of the many benefits you can get from the Veteran's Administration? Not only health care, but housing assistance, pension and/or disability. I highly recommend that you contact your nearest vet center to find out! Best of luck to you on this, too.

yes. thank you. I do recieve health care, but I have to drive over 45 minutes away for it, so I only go if i absolutely have to, or if i have a prescheduled appointment. When I missed work, i felt like I absolutely had to go, and verified before hand before I went that there would be no problems. I also do recieve a montly pension, but its not enough to support my family, but it does help. I just hope I can get this figured out because with my disability, its that much harder to get a job because I can only do so much.

If the OP only worked at his last employer for three weeks, I don't see how he could qualify for UI benefits from that employer -- regardless of the reason for termination.
Perhaps the OP would qualify to have his previous claim reopened. He did not resign from his last job, which would mean that he did not voluntarily leave or refuse work -- so he should be able able to resume unemployment. If that is not done automatically by UI when his new claim is denied, he should contact his local UI office to check into reopening his prior claim.
thank you dior girl. I did not think I would get a new claim but just reopen my original. I actually had to file a new claim about 2 weeks ago because it was a new quarter, but that was promptly closed due to the fact I hadnt worked enough. My original claim is still open, and my maximum benefit amount has gone up.

Excellent! Then you should have no problem resuming unemployment benefits on that original claim.

that is what I thought. Yet all my weeks I have applied for since being fired, while i waited while they investigated the issue, has been denied. I cant get ahold of anyone, and if I do, all they do is tell me to keep an eye out for the letter in the mail, so I assume I need to start getting things ready for an appeal?

Wow , I am so happy for you.
You brought in your note and were told it would be okay then they did that to you. Shame on them .
I hope they get bitten by the karma bug for treating a disabled Vet like that !
