I've looked at the tier system and read some of the info on it but I'm still rather confused as to how long I can get EDD. My CLAIM BEGINNING DATE on my UI INSURANCE AWARD letter was 10/30/2011. My first EDD week was 11/6/2011 which I received for 26 weeks.
I started my first extension on 5/6/2012 and I'm scheduled to have this for 20 weeks.
Do I qualify for more tiers?
I also read the following:
Regardless of when your regular claim or extension benefits start, December 29, 2012, will be the last week ending date that EDD can pay federal extension (Tiers 1 – 4) benefits to eligible unemployed workers, even if someone is currently unemployed or has a remaining balance on their federal extension.
What does that statement mean?Does this mean that no one is getting anything after 12/29/12? Does it mean that benefits are on hold? Cancelled?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm extremely confused. Thank you
Yeah they have extended these tiers a few times already. If they weren't extended you wouldn't be collecting Tiers right now (only regular 26 weeks and thats it).

I don't know much about EDD (it's my first time on it). I hope it gets extended early next year because I really need the help :/
A buddy of mine told me that he had EDD for two years recently so I thought that I'd get that too. Damn, I shoulda researched more. It's so confusing though. That tier thing had me going nuts
Did Congress do this last year too? Did they choose to extend? Was it a quick decision?
Last year there was a short-term extension to get through the holidays. Nov. 2011 Congress extended until 2/28/2012, but anyone already collecting a tier could exhaust it beyond 2/28/2012. In addition, in that legislation, Congress effectively began the elimination of Extended Benefits - which no longer concern you at all.
Congress began revisiting the issue in January 2012. On 2/22/12, new legislation was signed by the President which extended the legislation to 1/02/2013, but all federal benefit payments end 12/29/2012, in addition to the already begun phase-out of Extended Benefits. Michigan had already dropped off Extended Benefits by the time the legislation was signed. In addition, beginning in June, new UE rate triggers were added to the tiers, and beginning in September 2012 Tier 1 is reduced to 13 weeks, Tier 3 is reduced to 9 weeks, Tier 4 is increased to 10 ten weeks.
With the fiscal cliff looming, the election, political polarization, it is anyone's guess if Congress will do another short-term extension until new Congress can be sworn in, or if it will let everything lapse. UE benefits have lapsed several times previously, once for as long as five weeks, which creates a real nightmare for states in making retro payments once legislation is reinstated. You could conceivably be without benefits for months after 12/29.

Anything can happen.
So I guess I should assume that I'll be stuck w/o EDD for a bit and maybe forever. Dang
You're safe for the rest of this year but anything can happen after that.
